A 64-year-old woman who runs a shebeen (illegal bar) in Shurugwi Town is fighting for her life after an irate customer poured petrol on her and set her alight. The incident happened on June 15 at the woman’s home which also serves as her unregistered beer outlet.

The suspect, 38-year-old Evans Chirawo who is a former neighbour and customer of the woman, demanded beer on credit but the shebeen operator refused, saying Chirawo already owed her money. An enraged Chirawo then poured petrol on the woman and lit a match, sparking a fire that nearly killed her.

Quick action by other customers managed to douse the blaze, saving the woman’s life. Chirawo has since been arrested by police and charged with attempted murder.

Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko of the Midlands Police District said “We urge members of the public not to resort to violence when in dispute. All businesses should be properly registered to avoid such incidents”.

The victim remains in hospital with serious burns. Police warn that operating an illegal shebeen is dangerous and often attracts violent customers.
