Buhera man sentenced to 24 months in prison for brazen robbery

In a stern warning to would-be criminals, a 29-year-old man from Masenda Village, Chief Nyashanu, Buhera has been sentenced to 24 months in prison for a robbery committed in the Marange area.

Trust Gomo appeared before the Mutare Magistrate’s Court, facing charges of robbery after a disturbing incident that unfolded on May 10, 2024. According to National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe, Gomo had proceeded to the homestead of complainant Joseph Chisaenyerwa in Tinoengana Village, Marange, where he knocked on the door.

When Chisaenyerwa opened the door, Gomo threatened him with a pellet gun and demanded cigarettes. He then forced his way into the complainant’s house and further demanded US$50 from Chisaenyerwa, who stated that he only had US$5 in his possession.

Undeterred, Gomo took the US$5 and proceeded to rummage through the house, making off with an electric shaving machine, a cell phone, and a torch before leaving the scene. However, his crime was short-lived, as the local community members were able to apprehend the suspect, and Chisaenyerwa managed to recover his cellphone and the US$5.

The presiding magistrate handed down a 24-month sentence to Gomo, with 6 months of the term suspended. This ruling serves as a stark reminder that such brazen acts of criminality will not be tolerated, and the judicial system is committed to holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
